Off White Black Stripped Fish Odisha Handloom Kotpad Cotton Saree

The Odisha Handloom Kotpad Cotton Saree is a traditional handwoven textile known for its rich heritage, natural dyeing techniques, and tribal aesthetics. Originating from Kotpad, a small town in the Koraput district of Odisha, this saree is a symbol of the tribal craftsmanship of the Mirgan community, who are skilled weavers and dyers.

Key Features of Kotpad Cotton Saree:

• Fabric: Made from 100% handspun cotton yarn, offering a soft, breathable texture ideal for warm climates.

• Natural Dyes: One of its most distinct features is the use of vegetable dyes, especially a deep reddish-brown hue derived from the aal (Indian madder) root. The entire dyeing process is organic and labor-intensive, often taking days or even weeks.

• Motifs and Designs: The sarees are adorned with tribal and nature-inspired motifs such as fish, tortoises, axes, conch shells, and crabs, reflecting the weavers' surroundings and beliefs. These designs are woven, not printed.

• Border and Pallu: Typically features contrasting borders and elaborate pallus, often with intricate tribal patterns in black, maroon, or dark brown.

• Cultural Significance: Worn during festivals, rituals, and weddings, it is considered auspicious and symbolizes a deep connection to the tribal roots of Odisha.

• GI Tag: Kotpad handloom fabric has been awarded a Geographical Indication (GI) tag, recognizing its unique cultural and regional identity.

Disclaimer : This is a genuine handwoven piece, you could expect unevenness in the selvedge and weave, and colours may fade or bleed due to the traditional dyeing method employed.
